Eye care - sun
The importance of protecting our eyes.
Fortunately, in recent years, there has been a general increase in awareness of the importance of protecting our eyes from the sun's radiation and the threat it is to our eye health. This has lead to the widespread use of sunglasses, making them almost essential.

Most eye damage caused by sunlight is chronic, cumulative and sometimes even irreversible. Exposure to UV-A and UV-B radiation can affect different eye structures in the long term:

- Eyelids: Alterations in the skin.

- Cornea: It can cause keratitis, inflammation of the cornea together with pain, photophobia and eye irritation.

- Conjunctiva: Pterygium: Abnormal growth of tissue on the conjunctiva that can cause a feeling of foreign body and eye irritation.

- Crystalline lens: Acts as a natural filter of UV light which is related to the appearance of cataracts in adulthood, the main cause of reversible blindness in the world.

- Retina: The sun radiation on the retina increases the probability of having AMD (Age-related Macular Degeneration) which is the main cause of irreversible blindness in the world.

When it comes to sun protection, it is very important that the filter or lens of the sunglasses is approved. Don't mess around with this!

An inadequate filter is counterproductive, since the fact of wearing it causes (by absorbing part of the light) an enlargement of the pupillary diameter, and therefore, the amount of UV radiation that will reach the eye is even greater and as not being absorbed by the lens, will penetrate and damage the eye structures.
